Be careful what you wish for!

Last week, my coach asked me a question, “What do you want to ask for? What request do you want me to put out into the world for you?”

I promptly replied, “I want to ask for two one-hundred dollar donations to my 3-Day fundraising.”

“Why don’t you write a blog post about it?” he said.He then suggested that I think about how to tie my 3-Day event goals to my bigger picture and tell people about why and how I’ve done what I’ve done.  So I did.

I wrote about setting a big intention and how I get bigger than imagined results. A day or two passed. One donation, then two, three four–and then “it” happened. No, not two $100 donations. One $200 donation!

In the midst of my joy at all this generosity, I learned a valuable lesson: I had limited my asking. What I really wanted was to exceed my goal of $2300. What I asked for was two one-hundred dollar donations. What if I had asked for five donors and no limit on the amount? What if I had asked for five hundred dollars in donations? What if I had asked for 110% of my goal?

We do this to ourselves all the time. We don’t ask for something big–what we really want. No, we limit ourselves to what we think “might” be possible, what we imagine is feasible, doable, “reasonable.” My friend Augusto writes and talks about his “do-not-do-list.” Here’s something for your do-not-do list: do not limit what you ask for.

Do be careful what you wish for–you just might get it–and by wishing too small, you’ll fall short of what was really out there for you. Dream big! Do big! Ask big!
